Aves Cap Unbeaten Season With Thriller in the Final

Defense Rules the Day

Sycamore 7 Upper Arlington 6

If you like defense, you loved the Division I Finals.  The first half of the Sycamore-Upper Arlington match up, for the third year in a row, produced the lowest scoring half in the 10 year history of the OSLA Tournament and had Sycamore clinging to a  2-1 lead.

Sycamore goalkeeper Adrian Amrine was the reason for the Aves lead.  The senior keeper had ten first half saves and was named the Outstanding Defensive Player of the Tournament.

The high powered UA offense opened the second half quickly with Adriane Ghidotti and Erin Williams eachscoring to give the Golden Bears a 3-2 lead.  Emily Hunter & Lily Ricci, Tournament Offensive Outstanding Player, put the Aves back on top for good at 4-3.   Hunter (3g, 1a) and Taylor Young gave the Aves their biggest lead at 6-3, with 12:09 to play, but the Bears have been to the State Finals before and they knew the game wasn’t over.  Ghidotti found the net for the second time, and after Hunter’s third goal for Sycamore.  The Aves managers to hold the ball for extended periods of time in the last six minutes, but turnovers continued to keep the Bears in the game.  Kelly Mason scored with 1:45 remaining, the Bears won the draw, and Erin Junk made it a one goal game with 1:16 to go.  Sycamore won the ensuing draw, and ran out the clock to regain the State title they lost to UA in 2008.

Sycamore:  Hunter 3g, 1a, Ricci 1g, Keefe 1g, Young 1g, Kelp 1g, Amrine 13 saves

Upper Arlington:  Mason 2g, Ghidotti 2g, Junki 1g, Williams 1 g, Harer 3 saves

Eagles Soar to Third Championship, Near Flawless Championship Game Too Much for Blazers

New Albany 13 Hathaway Brown 8

Speed, Balance, Power, and Defense.  Sounds like what you need to win a State Championship.  It’s also a pretty accurate description of the New Albany Eagles.

Emily Haupt took the opening draw in the Division II Finals, went straight to the goal and 12 seconds into the game it was 1-0 New Albany and the Eagles never looked back.

Two more quick goals and it was 3-0, and HB said time out.  Following the TO, the Blazers settled down and Sara Smith found the net for the Blazers to make it 3-1.  New Albany’s punishing defense and balanced offensive attack kept the pressure on all day.  They held HB standout Isabel Ballard (5g) in check for the first half.  Her first goal came at 1:25, and New Albany led 7-3 at half time.

The second half was more of the same,  with Cara Hernandez, Andrea Ebling, Murphy Ferguson, and Haupt all ending the game with 2 goals each.  The tournament's Outstanding Offensive Player Molly Hamilton had 5 goals.  Senior Audrey Anthony led the New Albany defense and was named the Tournament’s Outstanding Defensive Player.

New Albany: Hamilton 5g, Hernandez 2g,  1a, Ebling 2g, Ferguson 2g, 1a, Haupt 2g

                       Arey 8 saves

Hathaway Brown:  Ballard 5g, Bigger 2g, Smith 1g, Kirby 2a, Musser 5 saves.

Shingleton Goal with 4.5 Seconds Give Anderson Second Title

Comeback Falls Just Short for Cinderella Bexley

Anderson 9  Bexley 8

Making their first appearance in the State Championship game, the Bexley Lions looked a little nervous early and fell behind the defending Division III Champions Anderson 6 – 2 with 19:53 remaining in the first half.  The Orange looked like an experienced tournament team, with Chelsea Ritter, Caroline Eldridge and Kate Shingleton all scoring.   The Lions charged back on 2 goals by Grace Curran and one by Gina Vottero, to make it 7-4.  The tournament’s Outstanding Offensive Player Shingleton gave the Orange a three goal cushion with 8:30 remaining.  But the Lions kept clawing.  Goals by Devin  Beaumier and Curran’s third of the game had the Orange on their heels and the score was 8-7.  The teams went back and forth for the next four minutes with both goalkeepers, Ashlee Heckard for Anderson and Jen Davis, Bexley making great saves.  With 1:12 remaining Elise Masse found Torrey Williams in front of the net and the Lions had come all the way back to tie the score at 8-8.

Anderson controlled the ball, again Davis (Tournament Outstanding Defensive Player) made two great saves, but when Shelby Smith rolled behind the cage and found Shingleton cutting over the middle the senior drilled it to the back of the net and the Orange had their second straight Division III title.

Anderson:  Shingleton 5 g, S. Smith 2g 1a, Eldridge 1g 1a, Ritter 1g,

                  Heckard 5 saves

Bexley: Beaumier 3g, Curran 3g, Vottero 1g, Williams 1g, Masse 2a

             Davis 13 saves.

Aves Return to Finals, but Bees Didn’t Make it an Easy Trip

Sycamore 13  Medina 8

The Sycamore Lady Aves remained undefeated, but the Medina Battling Bees didn’t make it easy.  As usual, the Aves jumped out quickly, taking a 5-0 lead, but the Bees weren’t ready to get on the bus.  They came storming back, and actually played the Aves even from that point.  In the second half the closed the gap to 10-8.  Lily Ricci took over at that point, scoring two of her 8 goals for the game and giving the Aves a cushion.and they were able to hold the ball down the stretch to preserve the win.  Sydney Thomas had 4 goals for the Bees.

New Albany Eagles Hold Off Chagrin Tigers in Title Defense

New Albany 13 Chagrin Falls 12

The Division II night cap was the game of the night.  A lacrosse junkie's dream.  Two great teams, great individual players, it lived up to the advance billing.  Including a very exciting final 12 seconds.  It was a great offensive game, but in the end New Albany sophomore goalkeeper Sam Arey made the save of the game, against Chagrin All American Megan Takacs (5 goals) to preserve the Eagle win.  New Albany’s balance also made the difference.  Molly Hamilton had 4 goals and 3 assists, Cara Hernandez 3goals and 1a, Andrea Ebling 4 goals for the Eagles.  Kat Lipp found the net three times for the Tigers.  Chagrin keeper Dana Burrello had 15 saves.
