Laurette Payette Receives USL Distinguished National Service Award at
2010 Convention
Laura Hebert, President of the Women’s
Division Board of Governors, surprised, toasted, and definitely
roasted Laurette Payette for her Distinguished National Service.
Laurette is one of the charter members of the Ohio Lacrosse Foundation Hall
of Fame, and was recognized for many, many contributions to the game of
lacrosse both in Ohio and Nationally. She is also a member of the OSLA
Board of Directors and currently serves as the head of the USL Women's
Division Officials Council.
Other recipients of the 2010 National Emeritus and Distinguished National
Service Awards were celebrated in both toasting and roasting fashion as the
presenters shared long lists of their accomplishments and contributions as
well as their “war stories” about umpiring and volunteering. Kathy Gibbons,
Super Region 1 Chair, began the festivities by introducing NE Barb
Carreiro as “card ‘em Carreiro” who set the bar high for all umpires in
New England. Laurette Payette, WDOC Chair, followed Gibby and introduced
NE Sue McVaugh who was for many years the “keeper of the tin box --- an
index card database and literally “the home of USWLA”(for all new and young
umpires, USWLA was the Women’s Lacrosse National Governing body pre-USL).
NE Bonnye Lang, the tournament scheduling and assigning guru, was
introduced by her dear friend Fran Trumbo from Super Region IV. Jen Dorff,
Training Committee Chair, and Lynn Beltran, Super Region VI Chair, tagged
teamed to present NE Jeff Secor, the face of Vail summer lacrosse and
a “giant” in Colorado lacrosse who incidentally towers over both Jen and
Lynn. Ericka Leslie, Super Region III Chair, recognized Nancy Coffman
for her Distinguished National Service, paying particular note
to her expertise in training the Youth Umpires and her many years of service
to the Philadelphia board. .

Back Row (L to R):
Bonnye Lang, National Emeritus from Super Region IV & MD; Jeff Secor,
National Emeritus from Super Region VI & CO
; Sue McVaugh, National Emeritus from Super
Region II & NY; Barb Carreiro, National Emeritus from Super Region 1 & MA
Front Row (L to R):
Nancy Coffman, Distinguished National Service from Super Region III & PA;
Laurette Payette, Distinguished National Service from Super Region V & OH

As we head into the OSLA
Tournament season, the intensity level at games tends to rise, so it is a
good time for all of us to step back, take a moment and reflect on the game
we all love and respect. It's a time to think about what is really
important. Sticks Up was forward the following from Mark Brown, a
youth coach in southern Ohio. We felt it sums up pretty well, why we
do what we do here at Sticks Up, it is about the game and about the
kids.....
Walk silently onto clamorous fields, and remember the advantage that comes
from quiet confidence. As best you can, without surrender, be of good will
toward all opponents. Win quietly and decisively; and honor all teams and
players, even those who are of lesser skill and experience. They too love
the game. Avoid loud and unsportsmanlike people. They are vexations to the
spirit of Lacrosse.
If you compare your game or success with others, you
may become vain or bitter; for always there will be greater and lesser
players than yourself. Enjoy the wins as well as personal achievements in
the game. Be aware of every success as you learn and play the game, however
small; those moments will always be yours in the changing fortunes of teams
and players.
Exercise caution when choosing heroes, buying equipment
or believing rumors, for the world is full of trickery. But let not this
blind you to what virtue there is; many persons strive for high ideals, the
game is full of heroism and honesty. Play your game. Accept winning and its
rewards. Don't be afraid to lose, for as important as any game is, there
will almost always be another. As you get older use your experience to
dominate, gracefully surrendering the speed and strength of youth.
Nurture strength of spirit needed to lose even the
biggest games with class and dignity. But never expect to lose. Many games
are lost before they are played. Beyond trying as hard as you can all of the
time, don't take losing to heart. You are a lacrosse player, no less than
any; you have a right to be on the field. And whether or not it is clear to
you, no doubt the experience of every victory and defeat will make you a
better player and a better person.
Therefore, be at peace with the game, whatever you
conceive it to be. And whatever your labors and aspirations in lacrosse,
keep anchored in your family, education and career. For as much as we love
the game, after devastating injury or loss, it's important to already know
that there's more to life than lacrosse. Play hard.
Enjoy the game.

| Dana Lindsay, former Cleveland
Heights and Current Stanford Player on Twaaraton List
It's the Heisman of Lacrosse, the Twaaraton Award , given each
year to the outstanding college
lacrosse player. The Tewaaraton
Award Foundation, in conjunction with The University Club of Washington, DC,
formally established the "Tewaaraton
Trophy" on August 29, 2000. Today, the Tewaaraton Trophy is
recognized as the pre-eminent
lacrosse award honoring the top female and male varsity collegiate lacrosse
player in
the United States. Simply, it is
the lacrosse equivalent of the Heisman Trophy. With the inaugural
presentation
taking place at the University
Club of Washington, DC in June of 2001, the Tewaaraton Trophy
is now presented annually
following the collegiate season at a banquet honoring the finalists and
winners.
